We got this pair of antique gunning Canvasback Decoys made by former Chestertown, MD resident John Jack Henry McKenney from. A Connecticut collector/dealer several years ago. They have been sitting on a shelf in our collection since we got them. Jacks work reflects that heritage. He was the nephew of George and Henry Lockard. His mother was their sister. His hand chopped bodies have a paddle tail and a neck shelf. His heads are very boldly carved with nostrils. He used glass eyes and most of his birds had flat bottoms and were keeled for river hunting. More on Captain McKenneys career is available in an article found in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museums Canvasback Magazine published in the fall of 2015. These Antique Gunning rig mates are structurally excellent and in very good shelf-kept condition. Voshells family originally put the rig on the market.

Both of these decoys are hand chopped and hand finished. They are very well made decoys with plenty of eye appeal. Both decoys have rounded solid bodies with a pronounced neck shelf and a distinctive tail. The alert heads are finely carved with a bold stout bill and carved nostrils. They have deep-set glass eyes.

The necks are doweled without evidence of a dowel and without neck nails. Both of these rig mates have flat bottoms and are keeled for river gunning. A flat lead strap, attached with two rows of 12 equally spaced small finish nails, run along the keel from one tapered end to the other. The keels are without tie line holes as a separate staple and ring are driven into the body.

Wing paint patterns on this pair are uniquely Cecil County Angel Wing and both are in McKenneys paint. Both birds are burr-tool branded. The drake carries the E.

Voshell brand of Ed Voshell. Both Decoys are about 15 Inches Long - Height is about 9 Inches - Width is about 6 inches - Weight is about 2¾ to 3¼ Pounds each. More Pictures Available - Stands Not Included. The item "COLLECTABLE ANTIQUE MARYLAND WORKING DECOYS CANVASBACK PAIR (JACK MCKENNEY)" is in sale since Sunday, January 07, 2018.
