AN ORIGINAL AND HIGHLY COLLECTABLE GROUP OF 4 MEDALS TO NURSE KATHLEEN AMY ROBERTS VOLUNTARY AID DETACHMENT AND FRENCH RED CROSS. British War and Victory Medal's named to K. = Relief to Wounded Soldiers. With Enamel Red Cross attached to ribbon.

" Societe Francaise de Secours aux Blesses Militaires des Armees de Terre et de Mere" (Translates to French Society of Relief to Wounded Soldiers from the Army and the Navy). French Honour medal of Foreign Affair's Silver Grade Type 1.

This medal is awarded to French nationals and foreigners for exceptional service to France or that have accomplished acts of courage in assistance to French nationals either in peace or wartime. Military awards are often bestowed on order of the French president, hence the common practice of calling it the President's medal. Bestowed many such medals to French and foreign nationals during.

Kathleen Amy Roberts, served No24 General Hospital Etaples, France during WW1. Born 1884 Old Radnor, Radnorshire, Wales. Died 16th June 1922 at Lambeth Infirmary, aged 38. Lived 116 Gypsy Road West Norwood Surrey, England.

According to the 1901 Census for England Kathleen aged 17 is employed as a Governess and domestic servant for William E Haines, Chemist in the Parish of Holmer and Shelwick Herefordshire. In the 1911 Census Kathleen aged 27 is living in a boarding house at 90,91 Guildford Street, St. The British Journal of Nursing for July 3rd 1920 states: In Honours for Nurses.

His Majesty the King held an Investiture at Buckingham Palace and bestowed the following Orders and Decorations on nurses:-Miss Kathleen Roberts, Voluntary Aid Detachment, Royal Red Cross 2nd Class. (This no longer with the group but easily replaceable).

Roberts, VAD; DGMS forwarded wire received from the War Office asking for arrangements to be made for Miss K. Roberts, VAD Sick Sisters Hospital, Etaples, to visit her brother dangerously ill at "Borgo Frano Ivrea, Genoa"- a very urgent case. Forwarded correspondance to AAG asking for permission for this lady to travel and to be accompanied by Miss Nisbett, VAD whose brother has been seriously wounded and was lying in a critical state at a CCS in Italy.
