Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald expressed the need for a police force under the control of the federal government.
They operated until 1919, when the Royal North West Mounted Police and the Dominion Police merged to become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1920. The Dominion Police officers were responsible for many tasks including guarding politicians and the federal government buildings, secret service work, protecting naval dockyards, operating a paroled prisoners branch, and enforcing laws regarding counterfeiting and other crimes. During the First World War, these specially selected men gathered intelligence information regarding possible acts of sabotage and treason. Each of these unique badges was worn by a member of the Dominion Police force.
This priceless collection of two helmet plates, nine police badges, and two buttons reflects our rich Canadian history. Below is a brief description of each helmet plate or badge and its use.
